Having safely avoided relegation in their first season back in the Premier League, Leeds United have much loftier ambitions this time around.

There has been talk of the Whites pushing for European qualification, although sneaking into the top half of the table may be a more realistic target.

With that in mind, read on as we assess whether Leeds United can build on the foundations they laid during the previous campaign.

Much like the 'difficult second album' syndrome in the music industry, a club's second season in the top flight can be extremely tricky.

However, after completing some shrewd business during the summer transfer window, Leeds are a good bet to make further progress this term.

Goalkeeper James Trafford has cost Leeds £40 million, but he could ultimately prove to be one of the shrewdest signings made by any club this summer.

Tarik Muharemovic also looks to be an astute acquisition. The 23-year-old centre-back stood out during pre-season, and he will be a big hit with Leeds fans.

Former Fulham playmaker Harry Wilson will boost the team's attacking output, further adding to the sense of positivity around Elland Road.

Manager Daniel Farke has understandably tried to keep a lid on expectations, saying that everyone needs to 'stay humble and grounded' this season.

However, the recent 4-0 friendly victory over Bundesliga side FC Augsburg highlighted why fans are dreaming of a push for European qualification.

"We can play better," Farke told LUTV. "First half, in many situations, also a bit untidy and not precise on the ball. We can definitely play better football and have done this during this pre-season.

"We have scored four goals and created more chances. We do all this hard work to be close to flawless, at least when the wheels start in the Premier League.

"We have to be outstanding, at our best level. This is what the lads also want, and it is hard work.

"Right now, especially the players who were involved during the whole pre-season, they are in really good shape.

"We have, of course, a few players who arrived a bit later after the World Cup, so they will need a bit until they reach 100 percent.

"But overall, as a group, we are definitely on a good path. And yes, I am happy with this."

With the club likely to make another three signings before the transfer window closes, this is an exciting time to be a Leeds fan.

The Whites finished just six points behind the final European qualification place last season, which was an excellent outcome for their first year back in the top flight.

Given the signings they have made this summer, they are capable of forcing their way into the battle for Europe if everything clicks into gear.
