'Not great news': Socceroo out of Asian Cup

Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess is set to miss next year's AFC Asian Cup after rupturing his achilles tendon playing for his English Championship club Swansea City.

The Swans have announced that Burgess will undergo surgery after scans confirmed the club's worst fears.

Burgess, 30, was forced off during Swansea's 1-0 English League Cup loss to Birmingham City last Sunday (AEST).

"It's not great news," Swansea head coach Vitor Matos said in a club statement on Friday morning (AEST).

"He is one of the main players of the team. Unfortunately for him, he has this situation now.

"He knows that he has all our support, and we know as well that he has the right mentality and the right character to bounce back.

"I know he will do everything to be as quick as possible and in the best shape as well."

Burgess will be sidelined for at least six months, probably longer, which means he will have no chance of being selected in Australia's squad for the Asian Cup, which starts in January in Saudi Arabia.

The Scotland-born, Perth-raised centre-back started in the Socceroos' opening two matches at the recent FIFA World Cup before losing his spot in Australia's starting team to teenage sensation Lucas Herrington.

Queenslander Herrington, 18, this week signed a five-year deal with newly promoted English Premier League club Hull City for a reported record transfer fee for an Australian player of $33m.
