Less than six months after helping India lift the ICC Under-19 World Cup, Deepesh Devendran is already making a compelling case for a fast-tracked rise in Indian cricket.The 18-year-old Tamil Nadu pacer, who impressed with his raw pace throughout India's unbeaten title-winning campaign in Zimbabwe, grabbed attention once again in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) by clocking 146 kmph during Madurai Panthers' two-wicket victory over Trichy Grand Cholas on Wednesday.More importantly, it wasn't a one-off effort. Deepesh consistently operated above the 140 kmph mark, underlining that genuine pace has become his biggest weapon.Deepesh entered the TNPL with growing expectations after emerging as one of India's standout fast bowlers at the Under-19 World Cup. Having earned his place in the squad on the back of a tournament-leading 14 wickets in the Under-19 Asia Cup. He played a key role in India's sixth Under-19 World Cup triumph, delivering disciplined spells against teams including Pakistan and Bangladesh before India defeated England by 100 runs in the final.Deepesh's cricketing journey has strong roots at home. His father, Vasudevan Devendran, represented Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and was part of the team that won the inaugural Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2007. He later joined the now-defunct, rebel ICL tournament after being offered a contract by Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev. Because the ICL was unauthorized by the BCCI at the time, his official domestic career came to an abrupt end. Today, V. Devendran works as an assistant coach with India Pistons, one of Chennai's most respected cricket clubs, where he has continued to mentor young cricketers, including his son.Against Trichy Grand Cholas, Deepesh played his part taking 1 wicket and giving just 25 runs and helped restricting the opposition to 173/7 before Madurai Panthers chased the target with two balls to spare.
