Brazilian winger rejects Arsenal's interest, signs six-year deal amid José Mourinho's influence

The Spanish giant Real Madrid announced on its official channel on August 7 that it had agreed to a new six-year contract with Vinicius, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2032.

The 26-year-old Vinicius had drawn interest from Arsenal in recent weeks. Arsenal attempted to sway him by offering the highest salary in the EPL. However, he chose to stay with Real Madrid. As a result, Arsenal appears to have been used as a bargaining chip in the negotiations.

Vinicius posted on his SNS, "Eight years at the Bernabéu was too short. Six more years, and forever." The Real Madrid club praised him in a statement, saying, "Vinicius Junior has been one of the most important players during one of the most successful periods in our club's history."

According to the BBC in the UK, negotiations were at an impasse until Real Madrid presented a new offer on the 5th local time. Vinicius accepted the new terms, finalizing the deal. There is also analysis that José Mourinho's persuasion influenced his decision to stay. Additionally, his salary was reportedly increased significantly, and some of his image rights were recognized.

Had Vinicius rejected Real Madrid's offer, Arsenal would have accelerated their pursuit. However, now the EPL champions must seek another winger. The news of Vinicius's renewal came immediately after Real Madrid announced the signing of Ivorian winger Yannick Diomandé from Leipzig. Diomandé is the sixth summer signing under new manager José Mourinho, following Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espinoza. Real Madrid is also attempting to sign Spanish national team midfielder Rodri (Manchester City), but negotiations have become complicated with Barcelona's involvement.

Vinicius joined Real Madrid from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2018 and renewed his contract three years ago. His previous contract was set to expire in June 2027. Real Madrid and his representatives had been negotiating a renewal for the past 18 months, and he will now continue with the club.

Vinicius, who played for Brazil in the North America Central America World Cup, recently returned to Real Madrid for his first preseason training and medical tests. He has made 375 appearances for Real Madrid, scoring 128 goals. With the club, he has won the UEFA Champions League twice, La Liga three times, and the Copa del Rey once.
