Chiefs and Pirates raise hopes of epic league title talk

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have wasted no time making a statement in the new Betway Premiership season, with both Soweto giants opening their campaigns with convincing victories.

The two teams occupy the top two spots on the table after the opening weekend.

Amakhosi produced an impressive attacking display to beat promoted Kruger United 3-1 in Mbombela, while defending champions Orlando Pirates overcame a stubborn Milford side 2-0 at Orlando Stadium.

Pirates will naturally start the season with confidence after ending Mamelodi Sundowns' eight-year dominance by lifting the league title last season.

Defensively, Abdeslam Ouaddou's side already look well organised, but their lack of cutting edge in front of goal could become a concern if they fail to create more chances.

Chiefs and Pirates make statement

Chiefs, meanwhile, looked sharp in attack. They were clinical with their opportunities and deserved all three points against league newcomers Kruger United.

The performance has given supporters fresh hope that Fernando Da Cruz's side could finally mount a genuine title challenge.

It is, of course, far too early to draw firm conclusions after just one league match. However, the early signs suggest the gap between the Soweto rivals may be much closer than in recent seasons, raising the possibility of an exciting title battle.

Mamelodi Sundowns should not be overlooked. The Brazilians, who won eight consecutive league titles before Pirates dethroned them last season, were not in league action this weekend but are expected to be firmly in the championship race once their campaign gets underway.

Attention now turns to the MTN8 next weekend, where Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns will all be in action.

Pirates head into the competition as favourites after winning the last four editions, but Chiefs will be eager to build on their impressive league start and show they are ready to compete for major honours once again.
