J.J. Watt reveals kit for English soccer club Burnley he spent 'two years' designing

NFL legend J.J. Watt is a minority owner and advisory board member of English soccer club Burnley, and his approach is more hands on than many fans might expect.

Many top American stars have bought soccer clubs in England in the recent past. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham is the top example, and in the NFL context, Tom Brady is involved with Birmingham City.

Not to be left behind, Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt bought a minority stake in Burnley F.C., a club based in Lancashire, England in May, 2023.

Since then, Watt has been involved in shaping the team's brand as well as their community engagement. And now, the club's players will be displaying another of his major contributions.

The legendary defensive end is a man of many talents. And his latest success is the new jersey he designed for the team, the Castore kit, which has a cream base and horizontal red and green stripes.

Watt starred in the release video for the shirt, playing 'The Milkman' with a message that the cream always rises to the top. He also reposted the promotion, revealing how long it took him to design it.

"Spent nearly 2 years designing this kit. A true honor and privilege. Hope you like it," the football icon wrote in his repost.

Burnley will be sporting this kit in the EFL Championship during the 2026-27 season, the second division of English soccer. The goal will be to get back to the Premier League, which is the highest level in England.

Watt's design will primarily be sported when Burnley play games away from their home stadium, Turf Moor. The 3-time NFL DPOY broke down the inspiration behind his design for the fans.

"To design a kit myself has been incredible," Watt said. "I talked to the supporters, what they like and just make sure that we're doing them proud. The biggest thing for me was bringing back the old crest.

"There's so much detail and so much tradition there. So being able to put that on the kit, and tying in some of the old features of Gawthorpe Hall and some of our old program notes...

"I think it all came together really well and I cannot wait for our supporters to see it."

Burnley will begin their season on August 8th in the EFL Cup, and their bid for promotion to the Premier League will kick off on August 16th. Watt will be hoping his new jersey brings them the success they desire.
