Liverpool told to pay up for Bradley Barcola after massive price tag revealed

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders argues one of Barcola's key qualities would be 'priceless' to the Reds

Liverpool have been told they must pay the market rate for a top player like Bradley Barcola after making the PSG winger their top target this summer.

A flurry of updates since the weekend have ramped up anticipation amongst Liverpool supporters, and the ECHO understands Liverpool are now preparing to enter negotiations with PSG for the transfer of the 23-year-old Frenchman.

It is expected that Barcola will cost well over £100m and PSG are believed to value the winger at around £140m, which would set a new British transfer record.

With such eye-watering numbers being thrown around, it begs the question of how high Liverpool's recruitment team will be prepared to go given the pressing needs to be addressed in other areas of the squad before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

But former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders, speaking to LiveFootballTickets, feels Liverpool have little choice but to splash out if they hope to challenge at the top table.

"Of course, the price tag of £140 million is too expensive," Saunders said, "but if Liverpool want to sign talented, game-changing players, that's what you have to pay at the moment.

"You sometimes don't even get good players for £100 million anymore. So I think spending the extra on the right players like Bradley Barcola, who are young and talented, is vital if you want to compete in the Premier League."

Nine-figure transfer fees have become more commonplace this summer, with Manchester City's £116m purchase of Elliot Anderson and Chelsea's capture of the £117m Morgan Rogers arguably skewing the market.

Liverpool themselves might have to acknowledge some responsibility for this after splashing over £100m on two players in the same window last year when signing Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

The resulting stand-off over Barcola, mirroring the saga around Yan Diomande, reflects these two players' standing in a landscape where a defensive midfielder can cost as much as Wirtz did just a year ago.

But with the Reds in need of goals to replace the contributions of Mohamed Salah, who left the club this summer, Liverpool may have little choice but to spend more than they had hoped to on a top-class attacker.

Barcola managed 42 goal contributions from 64 appearances in the 2024/25 season and, despite a less impressive return last season, Saunders is convinced that the Frenchman ticks all the boxes.

"He's got serious talent and will win you games on his own at times next season if they sign him," Saunders said. "He has real football intelligence, which he demonstrated all summer with France at the World Cup.

"Barcola has also won back-to-back Champions Leagues at just 23 years old, and that kind of experience would be priceless for Liverpool next season."

Rediscovering a winning mentality is vital for Liverpool next season, and Barcola has been raised on a diet of top trophies. Now it only remains to be seen if the Reds are willing to stump up what is required to secure his services.
