'We are the big fish' - Cesar Peixoto urging winning Wolves mentality

Wolves are preparing for life in the Championship.

Cesar Peixoto wants to instil a 'winning mentality' as Wolves become the Championship's 'big fish' next season.

The head coach has taken over a side that finished bottom of the Premier League with just three wins last campaign, with a view to transforming that mindset from a team that consistently lost to one that can challenge for promotion.

Peixoto says he has looked at what makes a successful Championship team and hopes his players will embrace their 'favourites' tag as one of the club's tipped to go up.

He said: "I studied Wolves, the players of Wolves, and before I studied the two or three teams who went up to the Premier League last year, what this team has to do well or not well to improve and go to the Premier League.

"I don't have the experience in the pitch, but I try to manage all the information I can have to attack the season in the best way.

"I'm prepared for a tough season, but because of that we work hard at the moment to build a strong team.

"But not only in physicality or only in the quality, but in terms of mentality. I want to change the mentality of the team, of the club, to a winning mentality, because in the Championship this year we are the big fish and we have to be prepared for this, because it's different.

"The mentality is we have to fight to win all the games, but to go to the Premier League or fight to win some games and stay in the Premier League is different.

"This kind of change is important for me also, not only in the tactical moment or in the physical moment, but in terms of mentality also is important."

Having spent all of his coaching career in Portugal, Peixoto will have his first taste of English football during the upcoming season.

The Championship is known for being a competitive league and tough to earn promotion from, and the 46-year-old is aware of the challenge ahead of him.

"I expect a lot of difficulty, I don't lie," Peixoto added.

"It's a tough Championship, but I believe we have a plan to build a strong team.

"We want to be the main character in all the games, but we also have good teams, good players on the opponent teams.

"Sometimes, in games you're going to play well, in other games you're not going to play well, but I want a strong mentality.

"When we don't play well, we have to win and fight for 90 minutes."

Throughout pre-season, Peixoto's style and system has been clear, with Wolves aiming to dominate the ball where possible and be aggressive in the press without it.

And intensity has been the key word for the new head coach, as he builds a team ready to compete.

"We're going to defend in 4-4-2, we're going to play with the ball in 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with a lot of dynamics," Peixoto said.

"I want an offensive game with high pressure when it's possible, with a strong reaction when we lose the ball.

"We want to be the main character of all the games, but I know not all the games you can do this kind of game, but we can try to do this.

"The number one thing is the organisation without the ball and with the ball. Afterwards, I want the team to fight to win duels, fight with intensity to win the ball in the offensive way or to steal the ball as soon as possible.

"Try to play good football, to score goals, to win games, it's important."
