7 transfers Man Utd need to complete for Michael Carrick to win silverware this season - AOL

This summer is supposed to herald a new era for Manchester United after the turnaround sparked by Michael Carrick's arrival, but the momentum will only be sustained if further transfers are done.

Carrick inspired a massive improvement at United after taking over in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim. Competing in just one competition, United became consistent and finished third in the Premier League.

Now they need to build upon the platform he helped create. Further deals are needed to shape a squad depth that is capable of competing across competitions.

With pre-season in full swing, here Mirror Football asssesses United's position; the work already done, which players need to be sold and who they should sign.

United are actually yet to negotiate a single transfer exit this summer. Hojlund's move to Napoli was an inevitability, due to a clause in his loan agreement being met, while Onana was simply loaned back to the same club he spent last season at.

Casemiro, Malacia and Sancho left after their deals expired and there is still work to be done to get rid of unwanted players and their wages.

United have completed two significant transfers to bolster their midfield following the departure of Casemiro. Tielemans is a ready-made Premier League performer and a true all-rounder who can be expected to slot straight into the side, while Santos has plenty of potential, but they are still some way short in terms of incomings.

The arrival of Darlow to become Senne Lammens' back-up made it clear that Altay Bayindir no longer has a future at the club. United have already loaned out Onana once again and need to find a permanent move for Bayindir back to Turkey.

Radek Vitek started in goal for United in their 5-0 friendly win over Rosenborg, with Lammens still away on holiday after the World Cup, but is a valuable asset that needs to be cashed in on. The 22-year-old impressed on loan at Bristol City and is valued at £10m - funds that can be reinvested in more important areas.

Joshua Zirkzee has been made available for a transfer, having failed to make the grade at Old Trafford since a £36.5m move two years ago. They will have to cut their losses to offload the forward, who has a pitiful nine goals in 75 appearances for the club in total, but Juventus are reportedly interested.

The most pressing need undoubtedly lies with Marcus Rashford, who remains a United player after his move to Barcelona failed to materialise. He is a wanted man, having returned 14 goals and 14 assists for Barca last season, but his £325,000-a-week contract, which still has two years left to run, has handcuffed him to United.

A move to Fenerbahce or Galatasaray was turned down by Rashford, while United don't want to sell to a Premier League rival. He could end up staying if the deadlock continues.

Despite signing two midfielders, Carrick wants another one. Casemiro has left and Manuel Ugarte has a serious injury, which has scuppered a summer transfer away from the club, meaning another player is needed for depth after a deal for Atalanta's Ederson fell through.

Brighton's Carlos Baleba has long been admired by United, but came off the boil last season and would still command a big fee. Bournemouth's Alex Scott is a player on the rise, but there is a premium attached to English talent, as shown by Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers' fees this summer.

Manu Kone represents a cheaper alternative. Roma are under pressure to sell the France World Cup star, who has reportedly agreed personal terms with United, due to financial issues. Roma want €60m (£51m) for the central midfielder - a fee United are unwilling to pay, so are negotiating, albeit slowly.

Carrick is also keen to sign another versatile attacker. Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha were all successes after joining last summer, but the departures of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and the potential exit of Rashford has left United a bit short in wide areas.

Patrick Dorgu showed promise as a left winger, while Mason Mount can play out wide, yet a specialist would make sense. United bid for Crysencio Summerville before he left West Ham for Al-Hilal instead and spoke to Antoine Semenyo before he joined Manchester City in January.

United have signed Tynan Thompson, yet he is one for the future, not now. The likes of Bradley Barcola, who has been linked with a move from Paris Saint-Germain to Arsenal, and Rafael Leao are almost certainly out of reach unless Rashford is sold.

The other position Carrick has identified is left-back, where Luke Shaw is left as the only senior player, with Harry Amass as a back-up, following Malacia's departure and Dorgu's emergence as a left-sided attacker. Diego Leon hasn't made any progress since joining last summer and Fulham's Antonee Robinson and Newcastle's Lewis Hall are targets.

Robinson has eye-catching pace and is an exciting attacker on the overlap, while Hall's cross ability from deep is a potential route to goal. Whether Newcastle would sell is another matter, having already lost Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, with Bruno Guimaraes also a potential departee.
