Ex Gatorade National Player of the Year returns to MA with the Revs

In 2010, a 14-year-old Jack Harrison made the decision to leave Manchester United Academy and head across the pond to the Berkshire School in Sheffield, MA. While there, the young English forward developed into one of the best boys high school soccer players in the country, winning three straight NEPSAC Class A titles and being named the 2014-15 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Sixteen years later, a now 29-year-old Harrison is once again bound for the Bay State, now with a plethora of Premier League experience under his belt.

On Saturday, July 25, the New England Revolution announced in a press release that the team had signed Harrison from Premier League side Leeds United for an undisclosed fee as a designated player through the 2029-30 MLS season, pending approval of his P-1 visa and international transfer certificate.

"Jack Harrison fills an important need for the Revolution as we aim to bolster our attack," Revolution General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer Chris Tierney said in the press release. "With Jack joining the Revolution, we are confident his creativity and game intelligence will help him make an immediate impact."

Per MLS rules, a designated player is a player whose transfer fee and subsequent wages are allowed to exceed the league's maximum salary budget charge. Teams are allowed to have up to three designated player slots per season, depending on how they choose to build their respective rosters.

In addition to making his return to Massachusetts, it also marks Harrison's return to the MLS, with the winger having made his professional debut in the league for New York City FC in 2016, making 55 appearances for the club with 14 goals in two seasons.

"As I considered my options, the decision to return to MLS and join the Revolution was the one that was most aligned with me," Harrison said. "It ticked a lot of boxes that I was looking for. I'm absolutely happy to come back to MLS and be back in Massachusetts to a city that is full of champions in all other sports, and I'm hoping we can bring a title here to the city of champions."

After a year of NCAA Division 1 soccer at Wake Forest, Harrison was selected first overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire, only to shortly be traded to NYCFC. After two years in the Big Apple, Harrison signed for its parent club Manchester City, though never wound up making an appearance for the Cityzens, rather being loaned out to EFL Championship clubs Middlesbrough (2018) and Leeds United (2018-21).

It was in Leeds that Harrison truly found his form in English football, helping lead the Whites to the 2019-20 EFL Championship title and promotion back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

After three straight seasons on loan to Leeds, during which he recorded 18 goals in 119 appearances including its first in the Premier League since 2004, the club purchased him outright from Manchester City for £11 million ($15,213,000) on July 2, 2021.

From there, he'd go on to make a further 82 appearances for Leeds, scoring 13 goals. Following the club's relegation back to the Championship at the end of the 2022-23 season, he spent two straight seasons on loan at Premier League side Everton before returning to Leeds upon its return to the Premier League for the 2025-26 season.

He spent the second half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Serie A club Fiorentina, scoring a goal in 15 appearances for I Viola in Italy.

When will Jack Harrison make his New England Revolution debut?

The winger won't be eligible to suit up for the Revs until his P-1 visa and international transfer certificate are cleared, while head coach Marko Mitrović will look to get him acclimated with the rest of new teammates.

Harrison was unveiled as a special guest following the announcement during the Revs' 4-1 win over Atlanta United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 25, which saw New England move up to third in the Eastern Conference on 29 points. The team will hope to have Harrison available for its trip north of the border to face CF Montreal on Aug. 1, and he'll look to make his home debut for the Revs against the Houston Dynamo on Aug. 8.

Ahead of signing Harrison, New England made a series of moves, including trading defender Brayan Ceballos to Montreal for $750,000 in general allocation money (GAM) plus a conditional $100,000. The Revs also traded an international roster spot to the LA Galaxy in exchange for $300,000 GAM.

Upon making his New England debut, Harrison will become the fifth Gatorade National Player of the Year to have represented the Revs, following Nick Downing (1998), Pat Phelan (2004), Lee Nguyen (2005) and Emmanuel Boateng (2012).
